Here are the things you do owe a homeless person, regardless of...
“…what really matters is that you’re telling the story you’re absolutely invested in. The outside stuff, some of that is just a matter of luck, a matter of timing, a matter of the economy or the world. You have to think of yourself as an artist first. What you’re creating is all that matters, and you’re trying to create the best possible story, and hope the right readers will find it.”

“When [my mother] says ‘making a literary life,’ she’s really talking about your entire life. It’s how you approach writing, how you approach the business, how you approach being a writer within your family, because let’s face it, there are a lot of people who say, ‘I want to be a writer,’ and everybody around them is like, ‘Are you cracked? Are you out of your mind?’
One of the things she always says is to start right where you are. And I think that’s really important. So many people want it all right this second, but you can start right where you are and build from that.”

“Not all falls are bad. Falling in love comes to mind. Falling out of it. Emotional gravity unfortunately, does not follow Newton’s laws.” —Jennifer Yu, Instances of Falling
Sweet, delicious evening coffee. You are just what I needed on my final day of matriculation as an undergraduate buoyantly divining the various meanings behind Shakespeare and Bronte and Wordsworth and Stowe and the like. We shall triumph together in all my future literary endeavors. Someone stop me before I go into a Hamlet-sized soliloquy.

The biggest disappointment, now that it’s happened and I’ve had some time to stew, is not getting that teaching experience. The one thing I said I never wanted to do and this is what saddens me. Of course, if I’m meant to teach at the college level, it’ll happen - some way. I just had this syllabus planned for 101 English students that I was excited about trying out. Now, I have to wait longer to use it, or never use it. Perhaps, if I apply again, I should mention this in my statement of purpose, how I should’ve done the first time. How it’s not just about my education, but it’s about others’ educations, it’s about setting a good example, and challenging, not just myself, but my students. It’s funny how rejection makes us realize the things we want most. (Taken with instagram)

My First-Year English professor gave our class these journals at the end of that semester. I record in it favorite words, ideas for blog posts, sentences for stories, random musings, and even grocery lists. Thank you Ms. Nobles! (Taken with instagram)
